The seminary is an "educational ecclesial
community" in which there are four areas or dimensions of
formation: human, spiritual, intellectual, and pastoral. These
are bound together into the one, organic journey of Christian
and priestly living (PDV n. 42). The four dimensions are not
to be thought of as distinct units nor as a criterion for
allocating time and energy. Although different dimensions may
necessarily take on a greater significance at different moments,
nevertheless all four dimensions of formation are to be continuously
and vigorously pursued throughout a priest’s life. The guidelines of formation and assessment are described in the document "Life at Oscott".
The usual Oscott formation-programme lasts six years, with
ordination to the diaconate at the end of Year Five, and ordination
to the priesthood at the end of Year Six. Courses in Years
One, Two and Three are validated by BU leading to a BA in
Fundmental Catholic Theology. Theology courses across the six year programme lead to the award of
an STB, through our affiliation with KUL, . The BA and the STB enable students to be admitted
to graduate level programmes in both the secular and the pontifical
university systems.
The curriculum comprises two years of formation in philosophy,
followed by four years of theology. Alongside this, students
also pursue a programme of spiritual, human and pastoral formation,
the four dimensions of formation (human, spiritual, intellectual
and pastoral) forming one integral, and ultimately indivisible,
process (q.v.).
